How the Violence Could Have Been Prevented

Law enforcements should have had the roads blocked so that nobody could have driven through the crowd. That one death and for those who were injured in the rally could have been prevented from all of this from happening.

There were also problems with the police officers not prepared for the rally because they were not properly equipped. Thomas said his officers were in their regular uniforms and needed to hurry into their armor.

Not only were police officers not properly equipped, but also not preventing the protestors from starting a fight to break out in the first place.

Counter protesters fought back, also swinging sticks, punching and spraying chemicals. Others threw balloons filled with paint or ink at the white nationalists. Everywhere, it seemed violence was exploding. The police did not move to break up the fights.(Zoeann Murphy/The Washington Post)

Law enforcement also failed to maintain order and protect citizens from harm, injury, and death. Officers failed to intervene in physical altercations that took place in areas adjacent to Emancipation Park.

The protesters were also armed, even though in the 2nd amendment it is the right to bear arms and there is still a miscommunication about this today. A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. This means that the government did not want to take over all the Militias and that everyone has the right to protect themselves to an extent.

In the 1st amendment, Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

This also includes the right to protest, but to remain peaceful. This is where the rally went wrong because someone has been killed for protesting and the law has been broken during the rally in Charlottesville.

This also took place in the police officers not watching over the protesters and to keep them safe from anything that could possibly happen during the rally. Many carried shields and clubs. A large number also carried pistols or long guns.

The police officers and whoever was in charge should have responded to the action more quickly.
There were also two officers killed in a Virginia state police helicopter crashed, while the rally was still going on.

  1. This might be one of those situations in which the event got out of control--it's possible that law enforcement couldn't even predict the size or actions of the crowd. If they could have, then perhaps cancelling the event would be in the best interests of the local community safety and property protection (many of the protesters were not local). So this makes me wonder: whose 1st Amendment rights are more important? What happens when a protest grows larger than a city can reasonably monitor? What happens to free speech spaces then?
