Unrest in Charlottesville

Unrest in Charlottesville

March 23,2018

The constitutions first amendment gives Americans the right to freedom of speech, but just
because its free doesn't mean you won't be stuck paying for something later, due to what you've said.
Free speech doesn't allow the right to incite violence onto other or the right to make public hateful speeches..In August 11th and 12th white supremacist proclaimed that what they were
doing is expressing their first amendment right.this couldn't be further from the truth. What they
were really doing was marching up and down Charlottesville disturbing the peace by yelling
racial slurs and causing unrest to the UVA students. This proclaimed protest would be known
as Unite the right rally.

Aug 11th the marchers went past the iconic halls of the university founded by Thomas Jefferson,
paraded down the middle of the Lawn, climbed all the way to the rotunda and started to converge
on the statue of Jefferson himself. That's when a group of 30 UVA students locked arms around
the statue and looked upon the hundreds of marchers. The marchers began to taunt the
UVA students by making monkey noises and chant “white lives matter!” moments later chaos
broke out as shoving turned into punching which turned into people spraying each other in the
face with chemical irritants. Marchers then began to pour gasoline on the fire by  throwing their
torches at the statue and towards the students. Laws were obviously broken by both side in
handling the situation and this was only the first day.
Aug 12th The very next day another rally was held and with more people on both sides, it
would only become worse as it progressed. Though there was a police presence that did not stop
what would happen. The rally was supposed to take place during the noon to 5 pm but the park started
to fill up around 8 am. Rally goers started to show up with clubs and shields and many of them came
locked and loaded with a long gun or a pistol. Many of the Counter protester who also came to
the party early showed up with clubs and shields.  Most of which were local residents, members
of church groups, civil rights leaders and onlookers. If the rally goers and counter protesters heavy
violence and altercations weren't bad enough. A Unite the right rally member got into their car
and started to drive, killing one and injuring many more. Unite the right members broke the law
first by starting fights, saying racial comments and slurs to antagonize and start fights, and by
driving through people.

  1. Very fascinated on the both sides of the rally and the violence that been had been created that caused harm for many people in the rally. Since the first Amendment can eliminate free speech when weapons are involved.

  2. I think Ana has a fascinating point here in her comment--she says that the 1st Amendment eliminates free speech when weapons are involved. But isn't it that the weapon can intimidate, eliminating free speech (so I'd say the cause-effect is flipped in this instance).

I agree with you with the details you provided here (make sure to hyperlink to your sources) that both sides seemed to have devolved into violence. But which side instigated it? How far can a free speech rally go?
