Don’t Blame Mental Illness for Gun Violence

The New York Times posted an article about not blaming the mental state of someone for gun violence. Many different cases have been presented to the world about school shootings and in almost every case, mental illness has something to do with it. Is that really the case? Or is it that authorities are trying to have sympathy for the shooter because of their illness? All of the shootings that have been happening recently, specifically the ones that deal with schools, the background behind the suspect is that they were in a bad state which leads to the result of mental illness. Guns shouldn't be placed in hands of just anyone especially not someone who has a mental issue.

Paul Ryan, a speak of the house stated that people who have a mental illness have access to guns and are the ones committing the crimes of school shootings after the shooting in San Bernardino, California that killed fourteen people and injured seventeen. Laws should be passed where an efficient background is made to see if whoever wants to purchase a gun is good candidate to own one. People with bad backgrounds especially ones with a mental problem shouldn't be able to purchase a gun. Republicans in the Senate rejected the bill for backgrounds to be done when purchasing guns backing up the ones with mental illness.

Many different estimates were done, trying to determine if mass shootings like school shootings have to do with the suspect having a mental illness or not. If eliminating gun procession to someone with a condition, it would only stop violence by four percent. Which isn't very high. So that goes back to the question, is it only people with a condition who commit a crime such as a shooting that kills others? Many different opinions would be made about this topic.

  1. Can you hyperlink into paragraph 1 and paragraph 3 where you use data that isn't common knowledge? And I'm not sure you can prove that all school shootings are a result of mental illness. Explore that more: I know there are academic research articles that focus on the premises related to school shootings/mental illnesses, and the reality that that number is really quite low. But, strangely, the President and some in the media like to claim that white men in particular are suffering mental illness if they're shooters. What else could be going on here?

In paragraph 3, what estimates are you speaking of? I agree that a 4% reduction would be effective, but only on a small scale. So that seems to mean that the issue is so much more broad than just with mental health, isn't it? And what do you mean at the end that "different opinions would be made"--what exactly?

  2. Unfortunately, There is a very awkward flow to this post. The title drew me in and kind of left me hanging. There are a few missing commas, and incorrect or missing words. When I followed the hyperlink, the quote by Paul Ryan was referencing shootings in general not just school shootings, and the incident in San Bernardino was committed by a married couple who had no history of mental illness or criminal background, against a workplace. The school reference could be eliminated. The reference to Republicans in the Senate voting against the bill doesn't mean that they are "backing" the people with mental illness. This is an opinion, unless there is a link that you can use to back this. Not that I agree or disagree with your statement, but if this is to be an academic blog, it is necessary to back up our statements. There is quite a bit of information in your link that you can use to elaborate on your point. There are a few good points, but more is needed.

  3. This is a great post ! You mentioned the issue regarding how mental Illness and guns shouldn't be put together and provided a credible source like Paul Ryan to back it up. The only thing I'd say is to add a bit more detail into the writing and explain what each paragraph means in terms of analyzing.
