Police Brutality Is Causing Turmoil in America
Police brutality has been a trending topic on the news because of the many killings that have happened. There have many multiple reports of police officers using unnecessary force on people of color. Many of these altercations have led to the police officer shooting at the victim, and the majority of the time the victim is unarmed. Police brutality has caused many people to protest and form groups such as Black Lives Matter. Not all police officers are abusing their power but some are and they are focusing on minorities. The role of a police officer is to enforce the law, patrol the areas they are designated, and protect people and their property.
Police officers have the right to protect themselves if and when there is a situation that might put their life in danger. They do not have the right to shoot at people who are unarmed, and could be suppressed using different measures. Police brutality is trending because of the number of police that have been shooting and caused fatalities on the community of minorities. The reason that there is a issue going on with this is because of the 1,146 people killed by police in 2017, 25% of those killed were black people even though they only make up 13% of the population. Black people are three times more likely to be shot by the police than white people. This has caused issues in the country because this is showing how racism still lurks around. Due to this many people are forming groups to protest against this.
Due to the number of police brutality cases in the U.S. there have been groups forming to protest, and bring justice to those corrupt police. Black Lives Matter is a group formed because of police brutality. People are joining and supporting this group because of the injustice that some police officers are doing by using deadly force against people of color. One example of the injustice is when a celebrity was caught drag racing, and acting belligerently while being apprehended by the police. Justin Bieber was the celebrity released on bond and no harm was done to him. On the other side an African American man was selling "loose cigarettes" and was taken down by police officer, and killed. The African American man did not have any weapons and that was an example of police brutality. Due to actions like that groups like Black Lives Matter are protesting that those police officers get detained for the abuse of power. They also advocate that police wear body cameras and microphones at all times to avoid future deaths on innocent people. These groups like BLM can try and bring justice by peacefully protesting, fight back in the legal system by trying to get the corrupt cops convicted, and bringing their community together to let them know how to avoid situations where their lives could be at risk when in the presence of a police officer.
Police officers have a duty to enforce the laws but to also protect the people. Many cities are now making it mandatory for police to have on body cameras and microphones. Police brutality is something that needs to be prevented and cities and people are taking action.

Your post was great. It had a lot of useful information, and it was smooth to read. I liked how you also touched on the topic of Black Lives Matter movement and how it sparked up because of police brutality. You also used statistics to support your statements which was also great. I like your post because it put into perspective what is actually happening with the issue of police brutality.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting post. I like how you identified the problem (police brutality) and later on proved it with statistics and data to support your argument. In addition, it was helpful how you provided an example of a current active socialist group like Black Lives Matter. This is really an important issue we need to be discussing about because if we don't then who will ?
ReplyDeleteAs sad as it is to say, most victims of police brutality happen to be African American, and most of the time they are usually unarmed. I definitely agree with the fact that police officers should have the right to protect themselves if they truly feel as if they are in danger, but not because of a suspicion or how something may look. Police brutality has gotten so bad that we are to the point where protests have been formed just a point can get across, but even then the outcome may not turn out how we want it to.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this post; you touched on the main topic and expanded it by explaining the police brutality portion. I believe that the police SHOULD be armed, but for the right reasons, which is to protect themselves. It is hard, especially in today's society, to tell whether a cop mistakingly or purposefully shot someone. It's truly sad. Many innocent people have died just because of the police, when isn't the police supposed to be the one who's protecting us?
ReplyDeleteYou make the argument that celebrities and white people are often treated very differently by police than the general public and, in particular, people of color. Can you name that celebrity here? I also wonder how effective those groups are in affecting change to police departments' policies and possible inherent bias? Because groups like BLM are certainly raising awareness. However, recently, police in Sacramento turned off their cameras after the shooting of Stephon Clark; that does indicate some action to not incriminate or to even muddy the evidence from the scene. What can these groups do to change policy?
