What is Bullying

Bullying entails aggressive and unwanted behaviors among school children which involve a perceived or real power imbalance. In many situations, the behavior can be repetitive or has the potential to be repeated for a prolonged period.  The students involved, that is, the bullies and bullied may have severe prolonged problems.  In this case, this post will advance the concept of bullying in schools, particularly the effects it advances to the victims.

Potential suicide: it is one of the worst things which the victims can do in response to bullying. It happens in many situations primarily because of depression and despondency. Moreover, the feelings of helplessness make a bullied person view suicide as the only potent option remaining. Suicide can take several days, months or even years and the affected learner decides extreme social ridicule and embarrassment (Ttofi et al., 201

Physical injury: bullying on both males and females often lead to physical injuries; they can be severe or small injuries. The injuries arise as the victims try to defend themselves from pushing, roughing, kicking, punching and many other aggressive behaviors (Stokowski & Kopacz, 2005). These injuries can often heal within a short period such as weeks or just days, but the mental torture and embarrassment often takes longer to disappear, particularly because of the fear of being mishandled again .Mental injuries: anxiety, irrational thinking, depression, loss of pride and dignity, suffering, and fear are long-lasting outcomes on a bullied learner. However, the worst happens with the understanding that no one can stop the aggression or can provide cover for the victim. To make matters worse, several students can witness the aggression, or even the school administration gets the reports of this adverse behavior, but it does little to punish the perpetrators or protect the ones on the receiving end of violence (Cook et al., 2010).

The first symptoms of bullying are shutting down, isolation, and staying close to one’s belongings as the only secure place from attacks. Moreover, outgoing children suddenly change and become angry or sad and get irritated with the least provocation. Besides, a learner who is a victim of aggressive begins performing poorly. Learning does not take place automatically, it needs a lot of serenity, and therefore when one walks around the school compound anxiously because of fear of potential attack, a student cannot concentrate even in class, and the outcomes of this is a drop in academic performance (Chaux, Molano & Podlesky, 2009).

The victims of this form of aggression can suffer from injuries which can last for some days or weeks. Additionally, mental damages may ensue and can take years to heal. The biggest challenge lies with the people in authority, and this case teachers who fail to offer protection or punish the perpetration of the violence against fellow learners.  The social effects of bullying include isolation, loneliness and shutting up from everyone including members of the family.  The greatest remedy to this problem is fostering pro-social behavior in schools and any other settings where students interact.
