Are You Not Allowed Here?

When it comes to immigration, the affects of the emotions people hold towards it have really been showcased throughout the 2017-18 year. Many individual's have faced the scrutiny of not being allowed into the United States due to their countries religious preferences, which have clearly been presented across the world. From Muslim ban's, to apparent border walls being built, immigration has made its mark forming headlines across the globe, creating outcry and protest among many. Are these acts crossing the line to the side of extreme. For example, should innocent individuals that are attempting to escape religious persecution in various Muslim countries not be allowed in the United States simply because of others actions. As the saying says, there is always that one person that has to spoil it for everyone. Aside from political views, many immigrants that are already within the U.S. face discrimination because of their ethnicity, which brings up the question of borderline criminal activity.  Immigrants within the United States are discriminated against due to their ethnic background, and political views which have been presented against them.

The current view and goal for immigration within the United States is not moving in a positive direction due to irrational officials in office. Following the beginning of Donald Trump's presidency, an immediate act towards implementing immigration regulation was put into place. Kristal Brent Zoosk, an author and associate professor at  Hofstra University in Long Island, goes in depth on the issue in her article "Muslim Ban Is A Hate Crime." In her article Zoosk explains how President Trump's initial attempt to ban Muslims from 7 specific countries violated the First Amendment's right to freedom of religion and the Fourteenth Amendment's right to equal treatment under the law. The  Immigration Act of 1965 was also violated, which prohibits discrimination based on national origin. These actions may be potentially argued against as a crime, as legal legislation within the U.S. may have been violated within this act. Situations like these display an act of discrimination towards a particular group mainly driven from political viewpoints.

Discrimination among immigrants in the United States, ads fuel to the fire of hate potential hate crimes. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), " Federal immigration enforcement policies, including border enforcement measures by Customs and Border Protection (CBP), have led to an increase in racial profiling, border killings, and denial of due process rights. Immigrant workers are often abused, exploited, and have become scapegoats and victims of racism and stereotyping." Examples such as the ones presented justify how discrimination among immigrants  based on ethnicity crosses the boundary into an unjustly act. Adding justification to this argument, according to Pew Research Center, about 52% of Hispanics within the U,S. say that they have experienced some form of discriminatory behavior based on their race and ethnicity.

Immigrants within the United States my face a form of discrimination in their daily life due to their ethnic background, and political views which have been presented against them. For example, President Trump calling Mexicans rapists and killers, only ads fuel to the fire of what inspires discrimination, molding a populations mindset. Discrimination should be considered a proper crime, and proper steps should be taken. The act of proper steps being taken is simply up in the air due Americas leader being one of the main individuals leading on hateful activity.

  1. I think one element that many Americans forget in the immigration discussion is that the U.S. would have negative population growth without immigrants (that is, families aren't having enough children to replace those who pass away from natural causes or die in accidents or from disease). The real risk is dealing with the prejudice that is pervasive in America at present and aimed directly toward those immigrants who are undocumented (but that we, economically, need desperately).
The big question is: what is the fix to this situation? How does one educate Americans to understand the risks of a loss of this immigration?

  3. It is very interesting that you will touch the issue of immigration in this blog, especially entertaining since the problem of the entry of immigrants to the country seems to be a hot topic in recent times. It is interesting that you specifically mention Muslims and Hispanics as the groups that have been under attack the most (mostly by Trump); however, you would need to clarify if you refer to all immigrants of these ethnics or only those who have entered the country illegally? And if so, it would be important to specify in how that status of “illegality” was acquired would since some immigrants enter the country without papers, others enter with a tourist visa and let it expire or those who entered the country protected under a law that is to finish, as is the TPS (Temporary Protected Status)
