Bullying is a Type of Crime

Over the past few years, the rates of bullying have risen significantly in the United States. The term "Bullying" refers to unwanted, aggressive behavior that many times involves an imbalance of power.  The behavior can be repeated and both kids who are bullied and bully others can have serious long lasting potential problems. The three types of bullying commonly seen are verbal, social/cyber, and physical. All three cases can involve serious implications to a person's mental and social health if not taken seriously and ignored. Any type of bullying that can potentially harm anyone should not be taken lightly and be dealt with as a form of crime.

According to the American Society for the Positive Care of Children(SPCC), one in three students are bullied every day at school. Kids come to school for a better future for themselves and to find who they are as an individual. If their coming to school to get bullied by other kids, chances are... they will start to develop feelings of hatred towards the school as well since it's where the bullying takes place. Many kids fear and won't tell any trusted adults either, in fear that they are "snitching" and don't want anyone else to know about it. This often leads to kids skipping school and missing their education due to other kids making the seven hours of school feel miserable.

For bullying to be labeled as a crime it must be serious. If the student feels threatened, physically stressed, and is constantly avoiding going to school, that is a issue that needs to be taken care of. Also, if it is constantly recurring after requests to stop that can be labeled as harassment which is no better or worse than bullying. On the other hand, if a student is occasionally being rude to another individual, that is not a serious case.

The student will need to learn that not everyone in this world will always be nice and increasingly  learn to ignore others irrelevant comments. According to StopBullying.gov, "Kids who are bullied can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues. Kids who are bullied are more likely to experience decreased academic achievement—GPA and standardized test scores—and school participation. They are more likely to miss, skip, or drop out of school." School is where students are spending seven hours or more of their day. Although it's not something kids look forward to, it definitely should not be a place where they don't feel safe.

Overall, Bullying is a complex issue and should not be taken lightly. Whichever the form of bullying, it can greatly affect the individuals mind and physical health. It is time to leave bullying as an act of the past, not the present or the future.

  1. You made a good point about how kids don't want to talk about bullying because some consider it snitching. Some kids would rather keep quiet than to speak up for the sake of their own health because they are so afraid of what their peers might think. There should be a greater emphasis placed on the education of mental health for todays youth, so that they understand the effects of bullying and that it's okay to ask for help.

  2. I think you made a good argument on how bullying is a crime. Bullying is a serious offense that some may not think it is. Bullying takes the lives of many humans because something comes over them and they can't take it anymore. It's sad that some people are afraid to seek help when they are victims of being bullied because maybe they feel as the bully would get more aggressive with the bullying and do more things to torture them. You had good examples and analyzed what you discussed. Great post.
